A worker has been killed in an accident at a shipyard in the Tuzla dockyard district of Istanbul on Sunday broadcaster NTV reported.


More than 100 workers have died in shipyards in the Tuzla region since 1992. The sub-contracting system and noncompliance with occupational safety regulations in shipyard operations are seen as the major causes of deaths in Tuzla.

Most of the work in Tuzla is outsourced to smaller companies which have been accused of employing untrained workers and adopting poor safety practices.
